Call
me Asa!Having been described as personable, confident, humorous and sociable, I don't know what else to say, except, "Thanks Mum!" I haven’t always been confident in self-image and my teenage taste in Star Trek and reading encyclopaedias leaves me shocked that I managed to get married and have a daughter - in retrospect, losing my virginity seemed a virtual impossibility. Thankfully, my geeky period passed and while standing on the observation deck of the Empire State Building I concluded that I really don't need to care what other people think of me. Later that same year, I travelled to Finland for a three-month exchange trip and met my future wife. Unsure of what direction to aim my life, I amassed a few qualifications in media and journalism. After graduation, my wife and I decided to begin our life together in Helsinki, the perfect place for an English-speaking journalist. After three years in Finland, I have written a monthly column for the Kangasalan Sanomat and worked for an English language magazine called SixDegrees, but now I co-host a weekly radio show, write for a bi-monthly magazine called Ydin and hone my copywriting skills with Chameleon Project.. I have interviewed and written about Neil Hardwick, Roman Schatz and Risto Penttilä, researched and produced a feature story about national service in Finland, Swedish-Finns in Finland and the rise of ethnic shops, plus many more. My primary project is Ovi magazine, with Thanos Kalamidas. Together we have created a monthly online magazine that tackles cultural, political and social issues in Finland and the world. The magazine has grown in stature over a year and we have attracted quite a following of readers. This portfolio is filled with some of my favourite pieces of work and should provide you with a further insight into what I am, what turns me on and what are the influences in my life. Enjoy! |
